Can’t the industry just ignore this initiative – what will be in place to force them to meet these targets?

That is exactly what we want to work with partners to establish. For example, it is clear that where Governments or economic regions have formal standards in place, the fuel economy of their fleets improves. But we all know that these standards differ from area to area – even though the market for cars is globalised. If we can engage the car industry in identifying future targets and helping map out a strategy to meet them, they can have much more influence on the path we take.  If the industry is not engaged, governments may adopt a wide array of different and sometimes conflicting approaches that will be a less optimal outcome for everyone.
